Railway Station in Novi Sad, Nov.15 2024 (BETAPHOTO/Dragan Gojic)
On May 12, Novi Sad Mayor Zarko Micin stated that an open competition will be held for the design of a memorial to the victims of the Nov. 1, 2024 railway station accident, where 16 people lost their lives and one was left critically injured in the collapse of the newly-renovated building’s concrete overhang.
“A memorial has to exist, there needs to be a public competition and a jury including an architect and urban planner and [we need] to consult the families [of the victims] to see what they have to say as well,” Micin said.
The mayor confirmed that the current memorial created by the city’s protesting university students and members of the public will not be removed.
“They put that up without going through any kind of protocol, without consulting any social group, even though our society as a whole should decide on [the design],” Micin concluded.
