The party and student activists from Novi Sad who have been in detention for two months now were arrested for conspiring to commit terrorist acts, incite civil war and endanger the life of President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic, Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic announced on May 15.
“They were planning how to manipulate the people attending the [university student] rallies, knowing that most of those people were not interested in starting a civil war or violence,” Brnabic told Happy TV.
Brnabic went on to claim that the audio spurring the arrests was made by one of the activists, who “gave it to the authorities.” She also stated it is “problematic” that security services were not then ones responsible for the recording.
The six members of the Movement of Free Citizens and the University Students Against Authoritarian Government were jailed on March 14 after several television stations broadcast an audio recording of their conversation. While the defense team insists the audio was created illegally and as such is inadmissible in court, the activists’ detention was extended by another 30 days on May 14.
