The arrest of three Novi Sad University Professors in less than 24 hours represents “blatant repression and revenge on part of the regime” for said individuals’ support to the demands voiced by the University’s students, the Academic Plenum stated on June 11.

The Plenum, an informal organization comprising faculty and research staff from all post-secondary school and research centers in Vojvodina, maintains that the purpose of the arrests is to instill fear in the university professors and all members of the general public who have dared voice opposition to the regime.

The Plenum’s press release explains that the two arrested professors served as safety monitors at the June 10 blockades organized by Novi Sad citizen assemblies and have been accused of disturbing the peace.

The statement further recalls that the dean of the Novi Sad School of Medicine was taken into custody on June 11, with tabloid media claiming she is accused of issuing inflated salaries to the school’s faculty.
