The frequency of attacks on journalists in Serbia is frightening, European Federation of Journalists President Maja Sever told Serbian media freedom watchdog Cenzolovka in an interview published on June 12.

According to the website, Sever underlined that the already disturbing stats do not, however, fully convey just how much pressure journalists in Serbia face daily.

“When people from Europe hear from Serbian journalists what they’re subject to, how armed people storm their newsrooms or NGO offices and conduct 20-plus-hour searches – they’re shocked,” said Sever.

“Wherever you turn, the situation with media freedom and press safety [in Serbia] is dysfunctional: from open attacks, assaults, hate speech campaigns [to] impunity,” she explained.

Sever recalled that tensions are high in the country and that Serbia has been in a state of emergency for months, with “journalists subject to attacks and pressure.”
