Two Opposition Councilors and Several Activists Arrested in Uzice

The Green-Left Front announced on July 7 that the head of its councilor group in the Uzice municipal assembly, Vladan Sindjic, was placed in 48-hour custody following an interview with the police.

According to opposition party, at least four more activists were arrested, including another municipal councilor and a schoolteacher. Media reported that a local attorney and councilor, Radovan Novakovic, was also taken into custody. Police detained professor Branko Nikolic at his school for participating in road blockades.

The New Optimism movement stated on July 7 that a political science student and activist, Pavle Cicvaric, was detained and placed in 48-hour custody. Cicvaric had previously shared on the social media platform X that he had been summoned for questioning following traffic blockades in Uzice.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs announced on the evening of July 6 that a Gendarmerie unit had swiftly and efficiently removed the citizens blocking the road in Uzice, adding that all participants would be identified and prosecuted. The statement said that around 350 people broke through a police cordon, entered a state road, and blocked traffic.
