Djuro Macut (BETAPHOTO/MILOS MISKOV)
Serbian Prime Minister Djuro Macut said on Aug. 27 that Serbia was facing crises that were not just political, but related to identity and values, which makes them complex and which is why unity, community, and the salves of dialogue and understanding were needed.
"In the name of the government I promise that we will continue on the path of our ancestors, that we will guard independence and freedom, that in dialogue and harmony we will build the future and worthily defend what has for centuries been most holy -- Serbia, her statehood and her people," Macut said.
This was part of the PM's speech at the opening of a ceremonial government session marking 220 years since the founding of the Praviteljstvujusci sovjet (Governing Council), the first body of executive government in Revolutionary Serbia and a precursor to the modern Serbian cabinet.
He said Serbia had always known it was strongest when it was united, going on to say that this was why the country's enemies would not allow it to be united and were sowing division and contention. He also said that certain individuals did all this with the goal of enslaving and partitioning the country.
