President of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic will call parliamentary elections when it is in the state’s best interests and that decision will not be affected by public opinion ratings, Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic said on Sept. 3.
“Vucic doesn’t care about power, let alone money. He cares about Serbia. . . He wants its people to fulfill their dreams,” Brnabic told Pink TV.
According to her, Serbia’s top leadership is currently focused on restarting economic growth, attracting investments and the stability of the country.
On Sept. 8, the media reported that, according to the latest polls conducted by Ipsos Strategic Marketing, the ruling Serbian Progressive Party is supported by 48.2 percent of voters, while the protesting university students’ ticket was spontaneously mentioned by 8.1 percent of interviewees.
The students, who have been demanding early elections for months, announced in mid-August they had nearly finalized their ticket but, for security reasons, would not be releasing the names of their candidates until elections are called. The ticket is said to contain no known politicians.
