At a Sept. 29 session of the High Prosecutorial Council’s disciplinary committee, a complaint against Bojana Savovic, a prosecutor at the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade, was  discussed in what she called a political trial and an attempt at intimidation.

The complaint was filed by her peer, Miodrag Markovic, alleging that during a discussion more than two years ago she “did not treat him with respect and consideration.” The complaint was also signed by Nenad Stefanovic, head of the Higher Public Prosecutor’s Office, but he did not attend the Sept. 29 hearing.

The incident in question took place in December 2023, and Markovic, Stefanovic’s first deputy, submitted the complaint in January 2024.

During the hearing, following an appeal by the Proglas (ProVote) Initative, some 200 peers of Savovic’s, students and citizens gathered outside the Council’s offices, holding banners with supportive messages on, namely, “Bojana is not afraid” and “Stop political persecution.”

Attorney Zdenko Tomanovic, acting as Savovic’s legal representative in the proceedings, said she would adhere to the law or the Constitution as strongly as always, insisting that “it is the duty of prosecutors to show to their peers that they are sworn to the law and the Constitution, not  political centers of power.”

Savovic said that the latest report was “perhaps the 17th or 18th in a row” that had been filed against her, and that it would not stop until circumstances changed. “This is one of the ways to break the backbone of the judiciary, which is now rising. It is clear that the Serbian judiciary is waking up. This has nothing to do with me, because they know they cannot intimidate me, but this is an attempt to intimidate my colleagues. But trust me, they will not succeed,” she said.
