Belgrade book fair (Beta/Milos Miskov)
The writer Dejan Atanackovic, who will not be participating at this year's International Book Fair in Belgrade with his Besna Kobila publishing company, has said it would mean defeat for everyone if there were "a pretense of normalcy" at the fair on Nov. 1.
The 68th Belgrade International Book Fair is taking place from Oct. 25 to Nov. 2. Publishing houses belonging to the Association of Professional Publishers of Serbia have announced that they will not participate, while those in the Association of Publishers and Booksellers of Serbia believe that non-participation would mean surrender in the fight for culture.
"If Nov. 1, the date of the crime in Novi Sad, sees a pretense of normalcy at the Book Fair, of commercial indifference and the supposed promotion of some culture that does not heed the world around it, it will certainly be a defeat of much broader proportions for us all," Atanackovic told the Nova daily on Oct. 8.
