The Judiciary Union has warned that the final blow against the independence of the judicial system in Serbia was in the works, while the senior staff of the Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime said in a press release that it would persevere in protecting the Serbian Constitution and law.

The Judiciary Union said in a press release that, in December, a session of the High Judicial Council would consider "a set of judicial laws that would essentially allow executive government to take full control of the selection of new judges and prosecutors."

"The crux of the disputed bill is in its requirement of anyone who wishes to become a judge or prosecutor to first complete training at the Judicial Academy, an institution currently under the control of the Ministry of Justice, a part of the executive government," the statement read.

The senior staff of the Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime thanked all members of the judiciary who showed them public support in "the defense of independent public prosecutor's offices" at a Dec. 7 demonstration in front of the Constitutional Court building in Belgrade, called in protest against political pressure on the justice system, including the announced amendments to judicial laws and reorganization of prosecutor's offices.

"We will persevere in protecting the Constitution and law of Serbia, in the fight against organized crime and corruption, with all means available to us under our authority and jurisdiction," the senior staff of the Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime said in a statement.
