In recent months, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic had managed to slightly improve and stabilize his position against his political opponents, and also to a decline in support for his regime, but had not significantly improved his rating, political analyst Djordje Vukadinovic said on Jan. 27.

Vucic’s “main hope and chance” for clinging on to power would be further divide and disputes among his political opponents, Vukadinovic told Belgrade daily Danas.

“In that case, a part of the anti-regime voters would opt for boycotting the elections, but this scenario is rather unlikely. On the other hand, no one should be creating an atmosphere that Vucic is finished and that he will certainly lose the elections, because it is not entirely true either, and may even be counterproductive,” Vukadinovic noted.

Vucic, according to him, will choose the date for next elections based on his assessment and interests, while the students or the opposition will not have much say in that process.
