The European Democratic Party said in a statement on April 10 that, what was happening in Serbia was not a warning, but lines being crossed, reporting an appeal by European Parliament members to European Union officials to act without delay due to Belgrade's regression in democracy.

The European Democrats' statement read that Europarliamentarians Vladimir Prebilic from Slovenia (Greens) and Sandro Gozi (Renew Europe, general secretary of the European Democratic Party) had sent a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the College of Commissioners, warning that police raids on the University of Belgrade, intimidation of teachers and calls for violence against university students revealed a dramatic erosion of democratic standards.

An EU candidate country cannot move toward authoritarianism, the European Democrats said, urging the EU to act now. The open letter calls on the EU to act urgently due to democratic regression in Serbia, the party said.

"Members of the European Parliament are raising serious concerns over the rapidly deteriorating situation of the rule of law, democratic standards, and fundamental rights in Serbia, calling on the European Commission to respond with urgency and clarity," the letter opens. In the letter, Prebilic and Gozi warn that recent developments represented a significant escalation in the erosion of democratic norms.
