The government is trying to conceal the fact that its support is dropping and that its political legitimacy is falling apart, Aris Movsesijan, the vice-president of the oppositional Movement of Free Citizens, said for the Danas daily on June 1, adding that this is why the ruling Serbian Progressive Party is avoiding elections.
“The announced rallies in Belgrade, Novi Sad and Nis are an image of political instability that has been going on for quite some time, the cause of which is the non-representativeness of the current parliament. When the people’s representatives in parliament do not mirror the real sentiments in society, the political conflict is unavoidably transferred outside of institutions,” he said.
Movsesijan believes that the way out of the crisis are not occasional massive gatherings, but elections, as the only essential mechanism for testing the legitimacy of the authorities and resetting the political balance of power.
“Rallies can serve as a demonstration of organizational power, but they cannot replace the election process nor solve the issue of [the public’s] trust in institutions,” he added.
