Justice Minister of Serbia Nenad Vujic condemned on July 23 the demolition of Serb-owned weekend houses at Lake Gazivode, describing it as a serious violation of the right to property and rule of law.
Vujic stated that the right to the peaceful enjoyment of property was one of the fundamental human rights guaranteed by international conventions, and further said that, if the judicial institutions in Pristina are not ready or able to provide effective legal protection to citizens whose rights are being violated, this raises a serious question of the justification of the European Union’s further support to such a judicial system.
He welcomed the response of the European Union and several member states and called on the European Commission to urgently assess the work of the judiciary in Kosovo and Metohija and demand the consistent upholding of the rule of law, protection of the right to property and securing of effective judicial protection for the Serbs. Vujic said that the Ministry of Justice, together with the Office for Kosovo and Metohija, would continue to provide full legal support to the affected citizens and inform the European Commission, the relevant EU institutions and international organizations which monitor the state of human rights and rule of law in Kosovo and Metohija about each case, with a request for taking concrete steps against Pristina.
