The Get Going for Change movement pointed on July 30 to the need to urgently adopt measures for protecting citizens during extreme heat, adding that it handed a set of recommendations to the Belgrade mayor and Serbian Cabinet as far back as a month ago.

A statement said that the proposal implies the adoption of a plan of activities during extreme heat, which would be activated every time that the Republic Hydrometeorological Bureau issues an extreme heat warning. The measures include adjusting work hours and remote work where possible, stopping outdoor work during the hottest part of the day, deploying tanker trucks and mobile free water stations, and the heightened cleaning and cooling of streets and squares.

The measures also include securing additional waterers for and the protection of animals, as well as more for the intense informing of citizens on how to protect themselves during heat waves. "Plans like these already exist in major cities in the world and pose a standard for protecting public health," the movement added.

The movement also said that the proposed measures were easy to carry out, financially justified and could significantly contribute to protecting the health and lives of citizens and called on the authorities to adopt them and implement them without delay.
