Jelena Banjac, a member of the Serbian parliament from the Free Citizens' Movement, said on Aug. 5 that, three decades since the Croatian military and police operation Storm, there is rekindling of nationalist divisions instead of dignity and remembrance for the victims.
"When remembrance for victims is turned into a political spectacle, it is no longer commemoration, but a parade of nationalism. The victims must not be a means for hate-mongering and scoring political points," Banjac said in a guest appearance on Nova S TV, the party said in a press release.
She said operation Storm was a hard day for Serbs, recalling that more than 200,000 Serbs lost their homes and that justice has not been done for those crimes. "What we witnessed on Aug. 4 was not honoring the victims, but humiliating them anew and rekindling the nationalist narrative," Banjac said.
On Aug. 4, a day of remembrance was observed in Mrkonjic Grad for all Serbs killed or exiled during the Croatian military operation Storm. The Croatian military operation began on Aug. 4, 1995 on the territories of Banija, Lika, Kordun and northern Dalmatia. More than 220,000 Krajina Serbs were expelled. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said at the ceremony in Mrkonjic Grad that preserving peace and stability was paramount to Serbia, which has never been stronger.
