International journalist's organizations expressed concern on Aug. 21 over the spiral of violence against journalists in Serbia which has intensified over the past few weeks, warning that threats to journalists and their families go almost completely unpunished.
A joint statement by seven organization says that since their mission to Belgrade in March threats on the internet have become increasingly frequent, as well as threats of sexual violence against professionals working in independent media and their families.
Since the start of this year, the Mapping Media Freedom platform has recorded 31 death threats online against 44 media professionals, according to the statement.
The organizations reiterated their call to the Serbian authorities to prosecute those who attack media professionals, to refrain from using harmful rhetoric and to publicly condemn all attempts at silencing reporting in the public interest.
