University Student Movement to Submit Ballot Access Signatures

The anti-regime university student movement has announced via its official social media accounts that, on Sept. 14, it will submit the necessary signatures for entering the upcoming parliamentary elections as a citizens’ group with a ticket titled ‘The University Student Ticket – The Students Will Win.’ After more than a year of public demands, the snap elections have been scheduled for Oct. 25.

The student movement went on to state that it will mark the occasion by a supporters’ march starting from the Belgrade University Rectorate building and ending at the headquarters of the State Electoral Commission, both in downtown Belgrade.

“The streets of Serbia were filled with queues of people wanting to sign [the students’ ballot access petition], thereby confirming their desire for change and faith that ‘The University Student Ticket – The Students Will Win’ is the one to deliver that change. We will carry the signatures [to the Electoral Commission] together, because this is a joint battle, just as it will be a joint victory,” the university students wrote.

Previously, Belgrade U rector Vladan Djokic told the Kompas online portal that he had given his signature of support to the university students’ petition.

Serbia’s countrywide university student movement arose from continuous mass protests against the regime in the wake of the Nov. 1, 2024 Novi Sad Central Railway Station accident, when a concrete overhang of the newly-renovated building collapsed and killed 16 people.
