Right-Wing Opposition Expects Poor Pre-Election Conditions

The upcoming election campaign will be worse than any in the past when it comes to the overall conditions and media pluralism, New Democratic Party of Serbia head Milos Jovanovic opined on Sept. 17.

“The public opposition narrative – shaped by two TV stations – has uncritically accepted the university students’ demand for elections without a change to the conditions, and [such elections] are now ahead of us. [The New Democratic Party of Serbia] will run in these elections with a clear ideology and political vision as the only representatives of the right-wing political spectrum,” Jovanovic told the NIN weekly.

The politician stated that Serbia’s attitude toward the European Union is pivotal because it determines the country’s position on everything else, adding that, therefore, the issue is one everyone must take a stand on.

“From defending our country’s territorial integrity, through how our recent history is understood – which we were reminded of by the death of general Ratko Mladic – [and] the social values we want to cultivate such as the definition of marriage, to protecting [our] independence in determining foreign policy or laying serious foundations for the country’s economic development,” Jovanovic said, explaining the repercussions of Serbian-EU relations.
