The meeting between Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen during the U.N. General Assembly in New York was short and spontaneous, EC officials have announced.
“They happened to meet briefly on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. It was a spontaneous encounter, a rare occurrence. . . The encounter was very short, unplanned and nothing more,” Radio Free Europe reported Commission spokesperson Ariana Podestà stating at a press conference.
Vucic posted a photograph of his handshake with Von der Leyen on his Instagram account, with a caption stating he took the opportunity during their short conversation to express his “sincere thanks for everything she has done for Serbia over the past years.”
Next week, Von der Leyen will be performing her traditional annual tour of the Western Balkans, with the exception of Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The official reason for this offered by the EC is that both countries are in the middle of election campaigns.
