The Peace Implementation Council's (PIC) steering board failed again at a July 14 session in Sarajevo to appoint Bosnia's new high representative due to the lack of a compromise between the U.S. and EU.
U.S. diplomat Louis Krishok, the high representative's first deputy and supervisor for Brcko will remain the acting high representative for now. The Sarajevo media has said that Krishok might even stay in office until general elections in Bosnia and Herzegovina in October. PIC previously failed to reach a consensus on the high representative on June 4 and June 30, because the U.S. is insisting on handing the job to Antonio Zanardi Landi, who also enjoys the support of his country, while France and the UK, with Germany's support, have asked that French diplomat Rene Troccaz be appointed to the spot.
Meanwhile, Italian Maurizio Massari and Danish diplomat Peter Sorensen have been mentioned as candidates. The Beta news agency has learned from diplomatic sources in Sarajevo that the Europeans are still insisting on the new high representative being an EU candidate.
Beta's sources added that, despite the clash between the U.S. and EU, the most important thing is that after Krishok's appointment as the temporary high representative PIC clearly stressed that "he will completely secure the office's institutional continuity, legal safety connected to all decisions brought by previous high representatives as well as that he will act in accordance with PIC's political leader ship."
