Czech Foreign Minister Tomas Petricek said on Nov. 7 that the Czech Republic supported the enlargement process as one of the European Union's key polices and that it supported all of the Western Balkan nations in their intentions to become members of the EU.

In an interview with Radio Free Europe, Petricek said that the European Council's decision in October to not open accession talks with Skopje and Tirana was wrong and that it was now important that the EU convinced its partners in the Balkans that it wants to work with them, that the process of enlargement is still credible.

"We must do our part in the internal sphere, but to us it is important that the EU holds up its end of the agreement and confirm its devotion to enlargement to the Western Balkans. Both North Macedonia and Albania have made progress in the past several years and we ought to encourage them to continue with reforms, so that we can make the EU's role in the region credible," Petricek said.
