RTS Blockade (BETAPHOTO/MILOS MISKOV)
Student protesters have been blocking both Serbian Broadcasting Corporation (RTS) buildings in Belgrade, demanding that a new contest be organized for picking members of the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media’s (REM) Council. They claim that the public broadcaster is operating contrary to the interests of citizens and that a new REM Council is needed to “tame” RTS. The regime of Aleksandar Vucic is ignoring their demands and has absolutely no intention of meeting them, because an independent REM Council could curb the main pro-government TV stations – Pink TV, Happy TV and Informer, which it uses for attacks against its opponents.
