The prevailing opinion among opponents of the ruling bloc and analysts in Belgrade is that the Serbian Progressive Party and the party leader, Aleksandar Vucic, have just annihilated not only the opposition, but democracy in Serbia, too. The election fiasco last Sunday was a combination of dominant influence over the mainstream media and a powerful machinery of activists with a very direct effect on public sector employees and pensions. Never shying away from direct pressure, they have been successfully collecting so-called “secure votes” from these sources. Without the two-tier strategy the election triumph wouldn’t have been possible, or rather it would have, but the opposition wouldn’t have been completely obliterated.
