An iron grip on Serbia’s politics and economy aside, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic’s reasons for concern are multiplying. Together with the coronavirus pandemic, threatening to bring about serous social problems early next year, the president must lay the groundwork for a new round of normalization talks with Kosovo. That’s not all though – Brussels and Washington are likely to step up pressures on Vucic to make more space for his political opponents, rebuilding a dialogue on the requirements of a fair vote with them, pave the way to the rule of law, improve the freedom of the media and relations with the neighbors, and take other steps to improve European prospects for Serbia.
