Tensions have risen in Montenegro ahead of a local vote in the country’s second largest city, Niksic. The election in Niksic, a traditional stronghold for President Milo Djukanovic’s Democratic Party of Socialists, is the first election race after last summer’s parliamentary polls that ended the Djukanovic party’s political dominance after 30 years. Another curiosity is that Niksic is not only Djukanovic’s hometown, but also the birthplace of his chief rival, Prime Minister Zdravko Krivokapic.
