A first-instance verdict by Belgrade’s Higher Court in a lawsuit filed by the new Serbian interior minister, Bratislav Gasic, against the KRIK website is a dangerous precedent muzzling free speech in Serbia. The KRIK verdict, finding the website guilty for having quoted what was said in a public trial, is a form of open pressure against each and every investigative journalist in the country, opening the door to an avalanche of SLAPP lawsuits designed to intimidate and silence.
