The European Union (EU) decided in mid-December to grant Bosnia and Herzegovina the status of a candidate country, even though the state had made hardly any progress in meeting 14 top requirements and goals set by the European Commission (EC). Clearly the EU made the decision for geopolitical reasons, in a bid to curb the spread of Russian influence across the Western Balkans.
