After they had improved in mid-2022, tensions have risen again in relations between North Macedonia and Bulgaria over the past few months. Bulgarian officials and politicians have certainly fueled animosities towards ethnic Bulgarians in North Macedonia with their rhetoric, and the European Union’s tacit nod to the strings Sofia have attached to the neighbor’s EU accession hasn’t helped very much either.
