Member of the European Parliament from Slovenia Tanja Fajon said on March 26 that the coronavirus epidemic may not be used as an excuse to suspend democracy and that no government should be allowed to wield unlimited power.
“Since many governments have declared a state of emergency in order to efficiently confront the real threat that coronavirus poses, we have to make sure that their responses are balanced and proportional,” Fajon, the chairwoman of European Parliament Delegation for relations with Serbia, said for March 26 issue of Danas daily.
According to her, EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson has warned that complete closing of Serbian borders will “present a major problem, especially for the Serbian citizens who should be allowed to safely return to their homes.”
China’s help to Serbia comes as no surprise, Fajon added, given the relationship the two countries have had so far. “One shouldn’t forget, however, that the EU with its member states remains Serbia’s biggest donor and that of all the Western Balkan countries, Serbia receives the most donations [from us]. Nearly EUR200 million has been donated to Serbia to help improve its healthcare system over the past two decades, while the amount in loans is even greater,” recalled Fajon.
She also said that the EU has so far allotted to Serbia a little less than EUR9 million to help fight the COVID-19 pandemic.
