Belgrade University professor Cedomir Cupic and research professor at the Institute for Physics Slobodan Prvanovic on March 31 demanded an urgent formation of a cabinet of national salvation as the incumbent government, according to them, had demonstrated “its irresponsibility and incompetence” during the crisis triggered by coronavirus spread.
In their demand, the two professors said “that although it was obvious it was only a matter of time for the virus to reach Serbia, no preparatory measures were taken.” The cabinet, they added, had switched to a different approach to the epidemic, “only after and exclusively because of its dropping ratings due to the irresponsible approach.”
They accused the authorities, particularly President Aleksandar Vucic of “abusing the concerns spread among the people and exploiting every possible opportunity for self-promotion and political propaganda, leaving the citizens deprived of competent opinion of relevant experts.”
“The state of emergency has been used as a cover to totally abolish democracy and any public debate on the current situation. The Serbian president has earlier breached the Constitution by exceeding his powers, while the imposition of the state of emergency has almost entirely suspended the Constitution as such,” the two professors specified in their demand.
