Over the past 24 hours, 248 more cases of coronavirus infection have been confirmed, and seven infected people have died, Serbia's leading epidemiologist Dr Predrag Kon reported on April 5.

The doctor said at a regular coronavirus press conference that the total number of infected persons had reached 1,980, and that 1,082 had been hospitalized.

"The total number of deaths has risen to 51, and of those who have died over the past 24 hours five were men, two were women," the epidemiologist said, adding that 88 people had been sent to the Sajam hospital, and that 98 patients across Serbia were on ventilators.

According to Dr Kon, as expected, after a brief pause Serbia's "outbreak is taking off, and the spread of the virus has accelerated.

" The epidemiologist called on citizens to avoid all contact. "It is vital that we firmly abide by the measures in force and reduce contacts to a minimum, there's no other way out," Kon warned.
