CBRN units in suppressing COVID-19

Serbian Armed Forces’ chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) units, engaged in suppressing COVID-19, have at their disposal a state-of-the-art system which allows them to disinfect up to 20,000 square meters per hour, the Balkan Security Network web portal reported on April 20.

“Although the visiting Russian colleagues have overshadowed the work of the local CBRN units, Serbian [CBRN specialists] are renowned worldwide, and their center in Krusevac welcomes soldiers from all across the globe – from China to the U.S.,” the report said.

The post also explained that the military classifies viruses as a biological weapon, and that is the reason why CBRN units have been engaged in the fight against coronavirus, and why they have been disinfecting buildings and streets in several towns and municipalities across Serbia.

The units have been using a solution of sodium hypochlorite known for its antimicrobial and antiviral effect. They have also set up disinfection stations in several locations, and were tasked with disinfecting the temporary hospitals before their opening.

According to the latest Serbian Health Ministry’s report from April 19, there are 6,318 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Serbia, and 122 virus-related deaths.
