Actress Svetlana Bojkovic is convinced the people do not want to be divided nor are they responsible for that huge threat to Serbia, but that it is the authorities which are “deviously instigating divisions.”

“The ruling party, as much as it denies it, is determinedly working on it. It divides the people into “them” and “us.” Do “we,” a handful of intellectuals, a false elite, as they call us, have enough power to divide the people? Of course we are not, nor are we propagating it; that, for instance, has never crossed my mind,” said Bojkovic for the June 11 issue of the NIN weekly.

According to her, there is something else that makes the authorities “recoil from a self-conscious and thinking people.”

“When you publically tell them that by forcing trash and cheap entertainment they, in fact, are downgrading the people, vulgarizing their taste, they twist the meaning of the remark, change the thesis and say that ‘we’ actually despise the people who watch this,” said Bojkovic, and added, “Do you understand what kind of manipulation this is?”

She pointed out that “for the authorities there is only the people who believe their offer of cheap entertainment, which serves to deflect the attention from serious topics and problems of our society.”

“The authorities have made this possible by organizing a great media blackout. And so the citizens are left with no choice. And anyone who disagrees with their offer is cast as an enemy of the state and the people. No, that person is not against the people, but against the kind of rule that implies constant manipulation,” Bojkovic added.
