Elections are an imperative for this government, even though they will be unfolding during an epidemic and pose a public health risk, epidemiologist Dr Zoran Radovanovic said on June 18.
"Campaigns and elections are a textbook example of a situation that should be avoided. Were I a member of the Crisis Headquarters it would be my professional duty to not allow elections to be held," Radovanovic told the Direktno.rs website in an interview.
Radovanovic added that being in a crowded room "is definitely a risk factor." "This is not just about the danger of senior citizens and sick people being directly infected. They can sit at home and be infected by their families after coming back from polling stations," he said.
Radovanovic said that "for six full weeks the number of new cases has been more or less ranged from 20-30 to up to over 100, without giving any sign of slowing." He also blasted a decision to turn kindergartens into polling stations as "thoughtless."
