European Council on Foreign Relations Co-Chair and Swedish diplomat Carl Bildt said on June 25 that one reason for the sudden unveiling of an indictment against Kosovo President Hashim Thaci was perhaps that the Special Prosecutor suspected that Thaci was trying to mobilize the White House to close the Special Court.
I would not be surprised to see these efforts increase, Bildt tweeted. After Kosovo Premier Avdullah Hoti also decided to cancel his trip to the U.S. after Thaci's indictment, Bildt said that that was the end of a planned meeting in the White House of relations between Serbia and Kosovo.
Bildt described the indictment against Thaci, former Kosovo Assembly Speaker Kadri Veseli and others, as "a political bombshell for Kosovo and the Balkans."
The Hague court's prosecutor's office for Kosovo Liberation Army war crimes has accused Thaci, Veseli and others for crimes against humanity and war crimes. The indictment is currently being studied by a judge for previous proceedings, who will decide whether or not to confirm it.
