Following a decision by the Swedish government to design a new strategy for cooperation with Serbia, the Western Balkans and Turkey, Sweden will continue to provide financial support for reforms Serbia will need to undertake on its path to the European Union (EU), the Swedish embassy in Belgrade reported on July 27.

As different forms of restrictions that threaten democracy, human rights and the rule of law are increasingly frequent across the world, it affects not only the states where they exist, but Sweden and the EU as a whole, too. Hence the decision to focus the Swedish aid on human rights and the rule of law, as part of a reform strategy for the Western Balkans and Turkey.

“Developments in parts of the Western Balkans and Turkey are concerning. That’s what prioritizes Sweden’s contribution to stopping the trend, based on Swedish development aid and political cooperation in the region,” said Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation Peter Eriksson.

Minister Eriksson added that it was in his country’s interest to continue cooperation with those states, in order to contribute to the development of democracy by strengthening the rule of law and human rights.
