The leaders of Serbia and Kosovo are slated to meet at the White House on Sept. 2 to negotiate, Richard Grenell, special envoy of the U.S. president for the Belgrade-Pristina dialog, announced on Aug. 14.
"We are happy to announce that the leaders of Kosovo and Serbia will meet at the White House for a negotiation on Sept. 2," Grenell Tweeted.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said after this announcement that Serbia was in no position to decline talks. He said the subject of the talks would be the economy, and described this as a good and important topic for Serbia.
A meeting, to be mediated by Grenell, had been scheduled between Kosovo President Hashim Thaci and Vucic at the White House on June 27.
Thaci canceled his trip to Washington after an indictment proposal against him was released. Kosovo Premier Avdullah Hoti confirmed that he would go in his stead, but then reversed this decision.
Grenell subsequently postponed the meeting.
The Belgrade-Pristina dialog was renewed in July after a 20-month deadlock. Vucic and Hoti met in Brussels, on July 16, under mediation of European Union special envoy Miroslav Lajcak.
