Serbia's leading epidemiologist Dr Predrag Kon denied on Aug. 17 press reports that students would be requested to wear three-ply face masks at school, explaining that they were allowed to wear surgical, cloth or any other mask types.

Dr Kon said in an interview with the Happy TV that it would be enough for students to wear "any type of mask" at school.

"If we detect any remotely serious level of virus transmission the schools will shift to online learning. These measures, and the way they work, will show if Serbian society is ready," the epidemiologist said.

Dr Kon said that at the second peak of the first wave of the coronavirus outbreak the number of new infections dropped at a slower pace than during the first peak, because "not everyone is respecting the measure, and it takes more time."

The member of the Serbian government's Covid-19 Crisis Headquarters also denied that schoolchildren would have to get the flu vaccine, as some media outlets had reported earlier, but that vaccination would be voluntary, requiring parental consent as well.
