Brnabic: New Era of Political and Economic Relations with U.S. Opens

Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said on Sept. 23 that a new era in economic and political relations between Serbia and the U.S. has been opened and that, in historical terms, she cannot remember when the relations between the two countries were as close as they are now.

She told the RTS public service that to find such close ties, one would have to go back to the times when Woodrow Wilson was the U.S. president, adding that “the strongest delegation the U.S. [has] sent to Serbia” arrived in the country on Sept. 22.

Responding to a question whether during the talks the political topics from the Washington agreement were also addressed, Brnabic said that the economic issues were mostly discussed, adding that a better economic position of citizens opens the way to talks about other questions.

“Now it is up to us to show how prepared we are to quickly create projects and [how prepared are] our companies to come forth with adequate ideas,” Brnabic said speaking about the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), which on Sept. 22 opened its office in Belgrade. She added that the DFC’s plans involve several billion dollars.

Speaking about the forming of the new Serbian government, Brnabic said that she cannot say whether she will keep the post because the decision on the new prime minister-designate is up to President Aleksandar Vucic. “We talked, I don’t want to lie, but how this will unfold, we’ll see,” the outgoing prime minister said, adding that there is still time for that, Nov. 3 being the final date for the new government’s forming.
