UNMIK: Meetings In Brussels And Washington Show Potential For Progress

At the Oct. 21 video-session of the U.N. Security Council, the chief of the U.N. Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK), Zahir Tanin, praised Belgrade and Pristina for resuming the negotiation process and urged them to commit to a constructive dialogue process, despite the challenges and differing views.

During the consideration of the new six-monthly report of U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres about the work of UNMIK, Tanin said that the recent meetings of representatives of Belgrade and Pristina in Brussels and Washington "show potential for progress in the further solving of difficult issues, when international resources are joined with the leadership in the field."

"The most important conditions for the negotiations to succeed are political unity, strong dedication and good will among the leaders, in Pristina and in Belgrade, and consistent international support. We welcome the resumed engagement and encourage the two sides to find a common starting point for overcoming the disputed issues and reaching a comprehensive agreement on the normalization of relations," Tanin said.

At the session, where Guterres' report for the period from March 16 to Sept. 15, 2020 is on the agenda, Tanin stated that the Special Councils of Kosovo and the Special Prosecution were integral parts of the judicial system of Kosovo, with mandates that are key for Kosovo's striving towards the rule of law, and for the future of Kosovo.
