The editors of Slovenia's leading media declared in a circular letter on Oct. 28 that they would not allow independent reporting to be interfered with, despite the politicians' attempts to depict the media as the conveyors of fake news during the coronavirus pandemic.
"We are aware of our responsibility in the current health crisis, and of the need for the measures which other countries of the world are also implementing. However, that cannot be the alibi for attempts of political interference in the independence of media organizations. We shall not yield to the increasing pressure, nor change the position of our adherence to the truth and the interests of the public," they wrote in the circular letter, as conveyed by Hina.
The letter was signed by 22 editors-in-chief of Slovenia's leading media, including those of the information department of the public broadcasting service, of the leading daily papers and news portals, of the Slovenian new agency STA and of the prominent weeklies and information portals.
