47 people died from the consequences of the coronavirus infection in Serbia in the past 24 hours, raising the total number of fatalities to 2,529, it was announced on the covid19.rs web-site on Dec. 17.

Among the 17,460 people who took the test, 5,129 were registered as newly infected.

There are 353 people on ventilators, our of the 9,499 who are being treated in hospitals. Since the start of the epidemic, 287,730 infection cases have been confirmed.

Epidemiologist Predrag Kon stated on Dec. 17 that the number of people being admitted to hospitals was still higher than the number of those being discharged. "The health system is facing enormous challenges and is under immense pressure; this can only be compared with a state of war," Kon told TV Prva.

Commenting on the increase in the prices of PCR tests, he said that it was obviously an economic matter, but that it also could function as a deterrent, since those who take the test solely for the purpose of travel, may also decide not to travel.
