Kadri Veseli: A Powerful Shadow Figure
The Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague have denied a request for temporary release filed by former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) officer indicted for war crimes against Albanians, Serbs and Roma in Kosovo and Albania, Kadri Veseli.
According to the decision, published on the court's website on Jan. 25, Judge Nicolas Guillou accepted the prosecutors' arguments that there was a risk that Veseli, if released, would attempt to flee, influence witnesses and repeat the criminal offense he was accused of.
Co-defendants Hashim Thaci, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi had filed requests for temporary release, too. Judge Guillou has not taken a decision on those requests yet.
Thaci, 52, Veseli, 53, Selimi, 49, and Krasniqi, 69, stand accused of crimes committed in 34 illegal KLA detention units in Kosovo and Albania against at least 407 detainees, of whom at least 98 were murdered, from March 1998 to September 1999.
