Epidemiologist Predrag Kon on March 2 said that there was no alternative to the introduction of lockdown, although it would be a blow to the economy, but stressed that it was most important to protect lives.
“Only full cutting of social contacts will render results,” Kon told state public broadcaster RTS, adding that the countermeasures introduced last weekend were not what the medical members of the Crisis Headquarters had demanded.
“We requested the closing of all venues, except food stores, gas stations and pharmacies. This is necessary to break the chain of transmission,” Kon said, noting that the epidemiological situation was additionally aggravated with the new virus strain, which had “arrived” in Serbia.
He added that the worsening of the epidemiological situation was also affecting inoculation. “This jeopardizes vaccination. Medical staff in the red zone has also been administering vaccines, they are exhausted and this must be stopped,” Kon stressed.
