An informal proposal made by Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa, that the best solution to the crisis in the Western Balkans is to finish the process of dissolving Yugoslavia, is nothing but a call for new conflicts and for a return to the 1990s, which Jansa never seems to have come out of, Social Democratic Party of Serbia leader Rasim Ljajic said on April 14.
"This is the best example of how nationalist populists easily reach for solutions that may seem simple and logical at first glance, but actually instead of one open dozens of new problems in the region," Ljajic told BETA.
He went on to say that Jansa believed that state borders must match ethnic ones, meaning that only members of a homogeneous ethnic group could live in one state.
"That 19th century theory was exactly what led us into the wars of the nineties, and Janez Jansa would like to observe, from a safe distance, new ethnic conflicts or potentially the 'humane displacement' of a population from one state to another," said Ljajic.
