The Croatian prime minister and head of the Croatian Democratic Union, Andrej Plenkovic, has said his party is the absolute winner in the local elections in that country.

“On behalf of the entire party leadership I’d like to tell you that the Democratic Union is the absolute, colossal winner in these local elections. We’ve won 15 out of 20 Croatian municipalities, which has never happened in history,” Plenkovic said in the evening on May 30, following the release of the official results of the local elections’ second round.

The party has won in three out of the six major cities – Osijek, Zadar and Velika Gorica. “Unfortunately, we didn’t win in Split, but it is the first time since the dawn of the Croatian democracy that we’ve won in Osijek,” the prime minister said.

Tomislav Tomasevic, the newly elected mayor of Croatia’s capital, Zagreb, and leader of the green-left coalition Mozemo! (We Can!), has promised to lead the city to a better future. He also asked the citizens to have patience, saying that changes will take time.

“I will proudly lead this city to a better future, and I will be the mayor of all its citizens, whether or not I was their choice [in the elections],” Tomasevic said in his victory speech at the movement’s election headquarters in Zagreb.

The second round of the local vote was organized as none of the mayoral candidates managed to win more than one half of the votes in the first round, held two weeks before.
