The leader of the Independent Democratic Serb Party of Croatia, Milorad Pupovac, said on May 31 that a decision by Croatian President Zoran Milanovic to restore the military rank and honors of Branko Glavas, suspected of war crimes against Serbian civilians in the early 1990s was disrespectful to the victims, undermining the memory of their suffering.

"Everyone who remembers those crimes, most of which were committed against Serbs in Croatia cities during the 1991-1992 war, interprets Milanovic's decision as an act of disrespect to the victims, offending the memory of their suffering. It's noteworthy that the president was elected thanks to a large number of votes cast by those cherishing the memory," Pupovac said in a comment for BETA.

In a May 29 decree, the president revoked a decision to confiscate war decorations awarded to the war crimes suspect, Banimir Glavas.

For a war crime against civilians in Osijek, in 1991, Glavas was sentenced to eight years in prison, but the verdict was annulled and a retrial ordered to the District Court in Zagreb.
