In order to speed up the accession negotiations with the EU, Serbia should focus on issues that are currently preventing it from showing itself as a candidate that fulfills the elementary membership criteria, with priorities being the constitutional amendments and the functioning of democratic institutions, Srdjan Majstorovic of the Center for European Policies (CEP) stated on June 24.
Majstorovic stated in the interview to EurActiv Serbia and BETA that, as for the judiciary-related amendments to the Constitution, the current developments did not inspire confidence that "the fundamentally most important arguments of the professional public would be taken into consideration and accepted."
"On the other hand, a question arises regarding the sustainability of these amendments, in view of the democratic deficit of the current convocation of the Serbian Parliament," stated the chairman of CEP's Steering Committee.
Majstorovic said that the potential opening of negotiation clusters would also depend on the functioning of democratic institutions, with primary focus on the results of the inter-party dialogue and their implementation, with the aim of securing of free, fair and democratic election conditions.
