A law on same-sex unions would be a major step forward toward harmonizing Serbian legislation with European  standards, and, if adopted, equal rights for LGBTI+ persons in Serbia, the participants of a panel discussion organized by the Belgrade Pride said on July 1, and supported a joint EU and European Council project called, Promoting Differences and Equality in Serbia.

Council of Europe expert professor Robert Vintemute who prepared an opinion on the law on same-sex unions said that "as a member-state of the Council of Europe and candidate for EU membership, Serbia must protect human rights, democracy and rule of law."

Minister of Human and Minority Rights and Social Dialogue of Serbia Gordana Comic discussed the status of the bill on same-sex unions and stressed that the expert opinion that the Council of Europe expert had presented had revealed itself to be very useful.

CE office deputy chief in Belgrade Nadia Cuk and deputy Portuguese embassy mission chief in Belgrade Joao stressed the importance of adopting the law through the prism of European values.
